Beyond Good and Evil 2 is coming to next gen consoles

Ubisoft’s sequel to Beyond Good and Evil (which released on the PS2, GameCube, Xbox and PC in 2003), has now been reconfirmed to be in development and it has been strongly hinted to be coming to the next generation of consoles. In a video interview, creative director Michel Ancel said:

We are in an active creation stage and at this moment we are only focusing on the game and making it the best game that we can. I can say that it’s a very ambitious game and we need some tech to achieve that ambition. We focus on the game. We create it first, then we’ll see what can run it. We don’t say 2013 because we don’t know when it will come. We’re working to create a great game and it needs more tech.

Last year,  Ancel did say the game wasn’t coming to this generation of consoles because of technical issues and the scope of the game.

You’ve got the city, the ocean, the moon and the space ship… And my thing is that we really want to make the game that was previously imagined, with all this feeling of travelling. Mass Effect did a good job on that side, and I think that there are a lot of things to do to continue in that direction, with storytelling and a massive world,

The problem is, last year in a different interview, when he was asked whether the Wii U was next gen Ancel replied “not really”. Whether this hints that the Wii U does not have the “tech” to run Beyond Good and Evil 2 remains to be seen. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

The comment made by Michel Ancel in June clearly changed because in March he said “I’m very excited for Wii U’s tech” and he was known to be a Nintendo hater and now he’s loving the Wii U so things changed.

But I feel when I read that March article that the statement was made in reference to its features, the touch screen, NFC which he also acknowledged was great about the Wii U back in June.

Ubisoft may have the final word here

Well… news has been limitted due to Nintendo wanting to keep things under wraps. We’ll probably hear something form Ubisoft later… when they made the comment about it not really being Next-Gen, that was a while ago… since then there have been reports that the later dev kits made a huge leap in capabilities to the first few lots of them.

I think it would be safe to assume that Nintendo has worked or conversed with Ubisoft in some way to ensure that the WiiU holds up in the other Next-Gen products… if the WiiU can run this game… it would mean that there would not be such a huge problem with lack of third-party titles on any of the consoles…

If the WiiU cannot run this game… it would already be a step in the wrong direction for Nintendo.
