Is Epic Games behind the Japanese garden tech demo?

We already know that Epic Games’s Unreal Engine 3 is running at least two of the Wii U’s games, Batman: Arkham City and Aliens: Colonial Marines. However, it seems that the studio’s support for the system may extend beyond simply porting their famous engine over to it…

Japanese Garden Demo

You may remember when Mark Rein stated he didn’t think he could get Unreal Engine 3 running on the 3DS, but also said that “the second Nintendo releases a piece of hardware that can run our engine well, we’ll be on it like water on fish.” And curiously, in a recent tweet, he said “Water, meet fish!”

Nothing’s confirmed, of course, but it’s possible he may have been hinting that his studio might’ve been behind the stunning Japanese Garden demo, which features lots of water and fish. Separately, Mark has also said that their supporting the Wii U with games of their own “isn’t an illogical conclusion to make.”

In any case, I’m happy to at least see the engine running smoothly on the system. Hopefully, that’ll help to quell some of the rampant HD twins fanboy rage.

It sounds like to me the “water, meet fish” is more of an expression that he’s supporting the Wii U, instead of literally contributing that tech demo.

The ‘Japanese Garden tech demo’ (the title given to it by Nintendo, as evidenced by the name plate at the Wii U booths) was not created by Epic Games. I talked to Mike Capps, President of Epic Games, and asked him if Epic Games created the ‘japanese garden tech demo’. He said, “No, that wasn’t us.” and also confirmed that Mark Rein’s tweet about a “pretty cool announcement” was not in reference to the demo or the Wii U or Nintendo conference at all. Mark’s tweet concerned a Xbox 360 faceplate with a Gears of War 3 design and a GoW 3 xbox360 controller. I also asked Mike Capps if Epic Games was going to develop anything internally for the Wii U and supper the Wii U in more than just having other developers use its engine for Wii U. He told me they have nothing to announce regarding the Wii U.

Oops, I noticed my typo, I mean to write ‘support’ not ‘supper’.
