New Zelda title to be revealed at E3

The Legend of Zelda 25th AnniversaryNot too long ago, Eiji Aonuma appeared on Famitsu’s TV channel, Nico Nico, and apparently revealed a very interesting little tidbit while he was on there: namely, that a new Zelda title would get shown during the week of E3 in celebration of the franchise’s 25th anniversary.

That’s all we’ve got. The platform of the game is entirely unknown, so I’d say it’s equally likely to be a Wii, 3DS, or Wii 2 project.

Do you think this is going to be a retro collection in the vein of Super Mario All-Stars, or a brand-new game?

I think it will most likely head to the Project Cafe. Wii still has Skyward Sword down the pipeline (even though the game has become chopped liver), and there’s a Ocarina of Time remake coming for the 3DS.

I think it is a remastered collection because they are busy with Skyward sword to create a brand new game.

As much as I want it to be something special for Cafe, I have a feeling you hit the bullseye.

I hope it contains some kind of Four Swords multiplayer. That would certainly allow all Zelda fans to celebrate together, as was said at GDC.

  4. It’ll be for Project Cafe and it’ll be a MMO.

What are we hoping for? A 3DS title? A Wii title? I hoping its going to be something mind blowing and special made for Project Cafe.

I hope it’s a compilation including every console game and the unreleased Tetras Trackers… which I had the opportunity to play at E3 2003.

As I’ve thought about it, I can’t see this game being for Café. The system isn’t listed for launch this fiscal year (ends in March 2012), and this year is the 25th anniversary. True, next year is the 25th anniversary for America, but Japanese anniversaries are the ones that have been officially celebrated. In order for this game to make sense, it has to be released before the end of this year, so it can’t be for Café.

I also don’t see this being another series compilation. As was said during the announcement @ GDC, this will be treated differently than the Mario anniversary last year.

@George Tirebiter: They could announce a project for the 25th anniversary this year and release it for next year and it would still be a tribute to the anniversary because the special anouncement was made for the 25th anniversary year of the Japanese release and released in the 25th anniversary year of the North American release, honoring both. So yes, it does make sense for a Project Cafe project and release.

    • George Tirebiter

That’s too much of a cheat to say the anniversary was honored by making the announcement. I already said it was the US anniversary, but that’s not the anniversary celebrated officially by Nintendo. They have a deadline of Dec. 31st, 2011, and they need to meet it.

By that logic, Nintendo flawlessly handled the 3DS launch even though most of the games we’re looking forward to aren’t here yet.

That this could be a Project Cafe title has still yet to be debunked. Again, making the announcement of a new Zelda title is in and of itself a celebration of the anniversary. No release necessary, and if you payed attention to what Aonuma said, he didn’t say they would be releasing something, he said they’d be talking about something, ie. announcing something. The announcement of a new Zelda remake for Cafe would be more than enough to celebrate for this year and to look forward to next year.

If the game isn’t anniversary-specific, I’d be all for the idea of it being for Café. Under my current impressions, however, we’ll have to agree to disagree.

I’m willing to bet it’s going to be another Zelda remake, they haven’t even released the newest zelda hype machine for the wii, why would they announce a new console zelda during this time? This simply wouldn’t make sense.

The only thing I could speculate towards this thought is that there will either be another zelda remake (majora’s mask?) for the 3DS or a compilation of all the previous zelda console games on one convenient format.

Apparently, they’ve wanted to remake ALttP and Link’s Awaking, the former of the two in 3D. This screams 3DS, although it could also mean OoT/WW/TP-style 3D. Perhaps it’ll be ALttP remapped in 3D using Ocarina 3D’s mechanics?

Miyamoto only said he was curious about the idea. Now in the past his “curiosity” has resulted in real projects, but there are no guarantees. The real message from that initial interview is he’s tired of 3Dmakes and doesn’t want the 3DS to be defined by them.
