Reggie: ‘We’ve only shown 10% of the Wii U’s potential’

In a video interview with the publication EFE at E3, Reggie Fils-Aime said that they’ve only shown 10% of the Wii U’s potential off at this point.

There’s a lot more to be shown in terms of the games and the experiences, but what we are communicating is this idea of two screens – the main TV screen and then the screen you have up close – and how it can create new and different experiences.

This goes hand-in-hand with a previous report we’ve heard claiming that the Wii U’s final specs are yet to be revealed. Let’s face it: there is probably still at least a full year between now and the Wii U’s release, and Nintendo are probably holding back some of the bigger announcements about the console and its games until we get closer to its release date.

Let’s just hope that’s the case. Third-party support is great, but I’m aching to see some first-party projects behind this machine.

This is great news to hear. Only 10% so far…. wow. I have a feeling that my mind will be blown soon.

  2. zxride64

Wait, 10%. I really want to know what the console can really do.

  3. Good news and bad news

This kind of statement is to be expected with the markets over-nervous response to the announcement. Apart from the final specs of the machine, I think we get the gist, but that will not really hit home until we see actual top quality product running and actual gameplay uses of the new controller. No doubt Nintendo have some other uses to spotlight, possibly as an e-reader, media player (don’t forget the headphone socket), showing more of the machines web-browsing and video-call abilities. It might even run some smartphone apps. I’m sure there is a lot of stuff to see yet…

    E3 2010 was just before 3DS release E3 2006 was just before wii’s release

On the other hand in one interview Miyamoto said:
“We’re very sensitive, of course, to trying to do all of this at an appropriate price. So I don’t know that we would be able to sit here and say that it’s going to necessarily dramatically outperform the systems that are out now. It’s part of the balance that we strike in terms of trying to find entertainment that is new and unique.”

    • donzaloog

They also stated that the Wii U wll be more expensive than the Wii. I think they may try to get the price down to $299, but they’re should be fine with $349 and still give a machine that far outperforms anything on the market today.

EFE is not a publication. It’s a news agency.

  10. Limelight788

Okay, maybe 10%? I really cannot wait to see some more out of the console and for it to reach it’s full potential.

  11. hawthorneluke

Well we have only just seen a few “experiences” this new controller can bring us. There’s still any real games developed with it in mind from the start to actually appear yet, so lots to look forward too.
Even with the tiny amount we’ve seen so far, it’s already half blown my mind with its uses, which are far more numerous and better than I imagined when hearing the rumours of a controller with a built in screen.

  12. Jmaster720
