The next Zelda game won’t take five years to produce

In the latest Skyward Sword-related Iwata Asks segment, our favorite President of Nintendo talked with Eiji Aonuma, the game’s producer; and Hidemaro Fujibayashi, its director. During the segment, Iwata pointed out that five years is a long time to develop a game and that it would be nice if they could do it in three.

Iwata:
You have limited time and people, so there’s bound to be something left over. But five years is a long time. (laughs) Can’t you do it in three years next time?

Aonuma:
Sorry! You’re right! (laughs wryly)

Fujibayashi:
Sorry, I’ll think of something that can happen in three years!

While lighthearted company reflection is hardly a confirmation that the next Zelda will be out in 2014, it’s nice to know that they hope to cut down the time it takes them to develop the game. After seeing the E3 Zelda tech demo, I’m not sure I can wait five years for another console Zelda game!

The faster the better, Zelda’s always a great series to play 😀 But, if they rush it that won’t be good D: So, hopefully they can find a way to cut the time and make sure they give it their all like they always have 🙂

  2. Andy

Take your time. I’d be more than willing to wait for another epic masterpiece on the level of Skyward Sword.

  3. THE I

I wouldn’t mind waiting. After all, we do get 3DS releases as well… Looking forward!

  4. crackkat

u cant wait five years for the next zelda? what does that mean 😛 if it takes five years you’re not going to play it? of course you will, we all just need patience and then when the wait is finally over we will have another mind blowing master piece!! sure it will be better to wait only three years than five years, but i would wait an extra year or two if it means better quality 🙂 zelda is too precious to rush, 3rd party games and other nintendo games will fill the gap

The only problem with waiting that long is that they will release a new console, with every 2 Zelda games lol.

I do believe in quality and that time brings that in game development however I am pretty sure that to reach that quality it would not take that amount of time, probably the hardest thing to develop in the Zelda series would have to be the epic level design and puzzles and development of the story and referencing it to the other Zelda games.

”Nintendo confirmed that their was a link between all the games and they have a massive document on how the games fit together”

But of cause behind lock and key for now, maybe because they want to release a massive book about the storyline, or maybe because they can release loads of Zelda games in the future to fill the gaps! Who knows it is all speculation for now.

They are pretty careful to make sure that they give some references in their Zelda games that correspond to the others.

”Depending on what timeline theory you believe in”

    Awesome to hear.

rake your time skyward sword is epic whith a awsome story line and alots of gameplay zelda for goty

  7. Let’s hope so! I know an HD game takes longer to develop, and especially a title of quality takes time for the extra care, but I hope they just hire a bunch of talented artists and developers to work on the next Zelda title for Wii U. I really hope Zelda Wii U arrives by 2014–the Wii U will need it. I hope that’s around the same time Super Smash Bros. Wii U comes out, as well. Guess I’ll just have to wait and see, and hope.

  8. Mariomaster1

This is somewhat related to this article, I guess, but have any of you been voting for Skyward Sword in the “Game of the Year: Death Match” on G4?

  9. Mikkelson

Ah well, i have time to collect all the older ones while they’re making the new one 😛

  10. billy

make it in 10 years if you want all i care about is that nintendo makes a new zelda game that what ever one wants why end a perfect game that ever one loves!

  11. Jacob

ocarina of time and majoras mask, then about 7-9 years later we get twilight princess, then another 5-6 and we get skyward sword…. The problem is that it takes too long to make games as awesome as this. shorten up production time, and include ganondorf in the next one as the final boss. and please don’t make me wait half a decade to kick his ass in the next one, okay?

  12. The Hoooo master47

yeah i agree with most of u guys and i would wait 5 years for a new Zelda game but the only problem is the longer it takes to make a new one the longer i have to deal with my friend complaining about how long its gonna take. 😀

  13. billyburke

  14. Nikki

Well, maybe its about time Princess Zelda set out to rescue Link for a change of flavor …. 😀
