Ubisoft: Wii U makes FPSs easier to control

While speaking to N-Gamer, Guillaume Brunier has said that the Wii U’s controller will make it easier for players to turn around in first person shooter games. Ubisoft’s Wii U FPS, Killer Freaks From Outer Space will take advantage of the controller’s accelerometer feature.

“We’ve used the accelerometer feature,” explained Brunier. “If you move very fast the game will know and adjust movement speed. Those familiar with FPSes know how difficult it is to go around 180 degrees. With these new controls it’s a thing of the past.”

What do you think about Ubisoft implementing this feature?

I’m confused on how they are using the accelerometer to do this, but if it works it’s great because 180 turning is definitely one of the toughest controls in FPS games. I’m kinda trying to picture as you use the accelerometer to change the sensitivity of the camera without having to use a menu option.

I’m sorry, this is completely untrue. I played with the Wii U at E3 and the analog nubs are so inaccurate it’s not even funny. I couldn’t be precise with them, it is by no means better or even equivalent to regular analog sticks.

He’s talking about the accelerometer, not the control pads.

I can see what they are saying. Think about how much easier it is to control an FPS with the Wiimote and nunchuck than twin sticks. The camera is simply controlled by pointing, even quiet complex manoeuvres are easy and intuitive with this set-up.

I can imagine that using the gyros and accelerometers to move the camera/reticule would be similar. Though I’m intrigued by the gameplay of Killer Freaks, I think most gamers would prefer to simply turn the controller, rather than their whole body.

Game Informer is the only source I’ve seen who have actually written off aiming with the accelerometer. Aside from their concerns with precision, a lot of it stems in “looking stupid” even though they wouldn’t be doing this in public.

I’m looking forward to trying this.

Also, I’m willing to believe most reports which have said the analog circles are better than one would expect having only dealt with the 3DS Circle Pad.

I am happy for the Wii U controller but I really hope it does not kill off the wiimote. Especially for FPS’s. The wiimote still has awesome functionality in FPSs and some serious untapped potential. There are barely any games that implement the Wiimote plus tech. There has only been ONE game that uses it purposely and that is Red Steel 2. Imagine if other companies spent time with it…..I love the pointer with its “free aiming”. This seems like you will be still aiming with your head and not your hand/wrist.

Killer Freaks From Outer Space is my favorite Wii U launch title.
