Rumour: Wii U to have an NFC-like ‘Gamer Card’

The Wii U will supposedly come with a device that has a similar feature to that of the Nintendo 3DS’s StreetPass. According to Dual Pixel’s industry source, ‘Geno’, the Wii U will come with a small device that you can slip into your pocket. Apparently, it has a low resolution LCD screen that will show an image of your Mii and a few stats. The device has no names at the moment but Duel Pixel have reported that third parties have nicknamed it the ‘Gamer Card’.

The device, like StreetPass, will gather the profiles of people who come near to you carrying the device. Dual Pixel have reported that the ‘Gamer Card’ already has a slogan: “When you walk back from work or school and log into Wii U you will have met new friends and even more enemies.”

This is not the first time there has been talk of StreetPass-like features for the Wii U. Last year, Iwata said Nintendo were considering allowing StreetPass data to transfer from the 3DS to the Wii U. If this ‘Gamer Card’ rumour is true then this sounds like quite an interesting feature. I really enjoy StreetPass and the joy that the little green light brings. What are your thoughts on this rumoured device?

Dual pixels has some bold rumors. However this is very possible

Why not just use the Streetpass feature from the 3DS for the Wii U? That way people won’t have to carry yet another thing just to get Streetpasses that they could have gotten with just one device.

    • Because not everyone has a 3DS. 😛

    • Wii U Dragon

But they can’t expect people with both a 3DS and a wii U to carry both these items around.

You left out how it’s supposed to work using NFC, which makes it an impossible dream as NFC would not work like Streetpass unless you’re willing to rub pockets with every stranger you meet.

It’s unlikely to work like StreetPass on the 3DS because that’s too expensive, and too battery-consuming.
It would work really well using FFC, but the source is just a kid with an imagination, so there’s no point in even bothering with it.

It’d be a neat idea though.

Yeah, I think this’d be more successful than the 3DS’s streetpass since (hopefully) you’d be able to put these things in a wallet. When you’d get home, the card would automatically interface with your Wii U and move all the data to it. Charging would be a bit of an issue though (people might forget to put it back in their wallets), and if Nintendo makes it too thin, the battery won’t last long.

Maybe they can also make alternate hardware options, like one that doubles as a watch. Or hell, even an Android/iOS/3DS app so people have to carry even less stuff around.

And much cheaper too, probably 25-30 bucks.
