Super Smash Bros. series to “change direction”

With the development of Kid Icarus over with,  Masahiru Sakurai can finally focus on the development of Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS. The connection between the two games seems like it is going to be a key feature. Last year he teased some ideas on how the two versions of the game could connect.

Now, in an interview with IGN Sakurai has said that the series will “change direction” a little.

There is a certain dead end we come to if we just expand the volume of the game. I intend to change direction a little as we go. The key to that’s going to be its dual support for 3DS/Wii U. I’m really just getting started on this so it’s going to take time, but I’ll come up with something that uses that link as the game’s central axis, so I hope you’re looking forward to it.

It will be interesting to see what these changes develop into.

I really don’t like the sound of this :/ What about people who owns 3DSs and not Wii U’s or vice versa. Are they only going to get half a game because most of the features of the game revolve around both of them connecting. Also even though I own a 3DS and intend to buy a Wii U I don’t see why I should buy two of the same game.

    Rethink your strategy Sakurai

Interesting. I hope I don’t need a 3DS to play the Wii U version, because that would suck.

I hope this means he isn’t going to change the core mechanics to make it more “user friendly”. The dumbing down of brawl so that “everyone could have fun” hurt what would have otherwise (and don’t get me wrong, i love Brawl) been a great game. If he’s talking about addons and frills, though, good on him. The whole 3DS/Wii U connectivity thing has me on the edge of my seat. He might end up selling me the same game twice, evil genius.

Not only the same game twice, but buying a console for a single game mode or bonus wouldn’t be really fair. In my case, even if I save a lot of money, I’d only be able to buy the Wii U because the upcoming titles.

To make SSB4 worth of buying, though, much more is needed than just adding more characters and dual support.

I agree, its also a bit weird to expect people to have both consoles and then shell out money for both versions.

But meh, as long as the whole experience isn’t tied to having both verrsions I will be ok with it.

    “change direction”???
It sounds good because the old idea is getting slightly stale, but I hope they don’t mess it up.

  6. What if I don’t want to buy a 3DS? It’s annoying enough to pay for half a game because of Internet requirements (I have 3G), but when I have to pay for a new console that I’ll rarely use to get the whole game, plus buying it for both systems? That’s just ridiculous. I hope there’s more to it than that.

I’m all for changing direction, but if that new direction involves me paying more money than I did in the previous direction, I’m not interested.
