Aonuma talks Zelda, Wii U, and motion control

In a recent interview, Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma has been discussing the future of the Zelda series and how he feels they can’t “go back” to traditional button control.

I don’t think we could go back to button control, especially after creating something that’s as natural to use as the interface that we have with the Wii Remote Plus in Skyward Sword. I think Nintendo will continue to have that focus on motion control and we’ll see that continue to evolve. And the hardware as well, in a way that will let people control things very naturally just using their own motions.

Though little is known about the game, Zelda Wii U is probably already the most anticipated game heading to the console. When questioned about the game, Aonuma showed interest in combining motion control with the tablet:

We’re looking at how we can combine that new controller with something like motion control, and perhaps use the new controller in such a way that it becomes a new item that you’re able to use to make the game feel fresh and new.

I’m not liking this. I didn’t buy the Wii because of motion controls. I won’t buy this one than, I just want to play the game with a controller.

I’ve tried motion controls, there not for me. I don’t like it, I just want a controller (to me that’s the way to play).

That’s why I’m excited for the Wii U. It has a controller.

I’ve played Skyward Sword for a bit, and the motion controls do work pretty well. That said, I don’t want them to become a staple of Zelda games. Besides, how are they gonna make 1:1 motion with that huge tablet thing…? I’d rather just have a Wind Waker-style game and the tablet could have, like, a map or inventory or something. Or maybe the player could control other characters with it (like those statue things from the Tower of the Gods) while still keeping control of Link

I am very disappointed to hear this, i am sickened with motion controls, while motion controls weren’t my biggest issue with Skyward Sword, it is however my biggest issue with the entirety of the Wii. They need to implement an “option” to where people can play using either method, if this motion controls strangle this new device, then Nintendo had better not expect my money.
