Friend codes are banished, plus other Wii U online details!

From the Japanese Nintendo Direct, and North American video shortly after it, we received new details on the online functionality of the Wii U and its requirements:

  • For functionality such as Miiverse, Wii U Video Chat, being able to play Wii games, and the eShop; you will have to download the day 1 update for the console.
  • Friend codes are now a thing of the past and the Wii U will feature an account system. You will be able to create 12 accounts per console.
  • Any game downloaded to the Wii U console will be available in all other accounts assigned to that console, and users will not be required to purchase the software again.

Tomb Raider is not in development for Wii U at the moment

The community & communication manager at Crystal Dynamics, Meagan Marie, said that:

Tomb Raider is in development for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. No Wii U at this time!

This means we can pretty much rule out this game as the Square Enix title to be ported to the Wii U, but it could be done later.

A post on NeoGaf claims that Straight Right, the developer porting Mass Effect 3 to the Wii U, are also working a on a Square Enix game to port for early next year. There is no confirmation on what the game might be, or if a port is even happening.

I can not talk about the new eShop in detail. What I do know is that Nintendo is doing everything to make this console much more open, social and indie-friendly than the Wii ever was.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate will be playable at New York Comic Con

 

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, coming to the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, will be playable at the upcoming New York Comic Con as confirmed by Capcom. Although only the 3DS version will be playable, that version will work in conjunction with the Wii U’s.

If you’re looking forward to the upcoming Wii U game, Zombie U, then you need to check out the official Japanese launch site. There’s not much there at the present time, but the closer we come to the release of both the Wii U and Zombie U, more content is sure to come.

At their September 13th conference, Nintendo revealed that New Super Mario Bros. U will feature a continuous, singular world similar to the one in 1991’s Super Mario World. The “worlds” will not be divided as in other New Super Mario Bros. games.
