id Software is not jumping on the Wii U bandwagon

We probably won't be seeing this on the Wii U any time soon.

Developers have been coming out in droves to show support for the Wii U, major franchises such as Tekken, Assassin’s Creed, Darksiders, Battlefield are coming to the console but not everyone is happy.

id Software, the studio responsible for the upcoming game Rage for PS3/360/PC, remains cautious about the Wii U and have pretty much ruled out the idea of having their software on the platform.

While speaking to Eurogamer, Tim Willits, creative director for id Software claimed that the Wii U would not have the right audience for one of their first person shooting titles and that id software should “keep their toes where they know best”. He also spoke about the difficulties of being successful on a Nintendo platform.

“The Nintendo market is a tough market for us to get into. A lot of first party games, a lot of licensed games – those are the ones that have done the best on that platform. I’d love it if we can get a hardcore FPS community going and build on it, but it’s tough.”

This is not the first time and probably won’t be the last time that third parties have complained about how tough it is to be successful on Nintendo platforms when pitted against first party games such as Zelda and Mario. However I believe that Nintendo have been taking steps to make sure that third parties are successful on their platforms. The lack of Zelda and Mario at launch helped third party games like Super Street Fighter be successful.

So what do you think? Do you believe that id Software’s concerns are warranted?

Mass Effect and Wii U are a “nice fit”

Will Mass Effect 3 come to the Wii U?

EA games chief, Frank Gibeau spoke with GameTrailers about the possibility of bringing Mass Effect to the Wii U. Though he could not confirm that they were bringing the series to the console he did have some interesting things to say about the matter.

“I can’t say we are going to do it on the Wii U, but you can imagine what we could do with that controller in the Mass Effect universe. It feels like a really nice fit, but we’ll announce that when the time is right.”

We’ll announce that when the time is right? If that doesn’t sound like a hint that Mass Effect will be coming to the Wii U then I don’t know what is.

Tekken and Assassin’s Creed to be ports of previous games?

Will the Wii U get a Tekken 6 port?

Two of the first third party franchises announced to be making their way to the Wii U were Assassin’s Creed and Tekken. We know very little about the form that these games will take.

While speaking to SPOnG, Tekken series producer, Katsuhiro Harada could not confirm that the Tekken game coming to the Wii U would be a brand new game. Harada stated that they were not far into development and were still seeing what Nintendo’s newest home console was capable of. It could be that the Wii U will receive a port of Tekken 6 but one that takes full advantage of what the Wii U can do like Super Street Fighter IV for the 3DS.

Tekken 7 would also be a possibility as it was apparently reported to be in early development last month.

Though Harada did not go into much detail about Tekken for the Wii U he did share some ideas on how Tekken could be enhanced by the Wii U’s new controller.

“Some examples you could think of for Tekken Wii U could be for perhaps something akin to a strategy guide. Before now you perhaps would have to go into a specific Practice mode in order to learn about your moves and your enemy’s statistics. Now, you could pull up that data on the controller’s screen while you’re fighting an opponent. There are many possibilities for Tekken right now on Wii U.”

Ubisoft also would not confirm, whether the Assassin’s Creed game coming to the Nintendo Wii U will be a port or an original game. However they did say that they would include touch screen maps, weapon selection and ‘Eagle Vision’ on the Wii U version.

So what do you think? Would you be ok with ports of previous HD games from the Tekken and Assassin’s Creed franchise or do you want brand new games?

Is Epic Games behind the Japanese garden tech demo?

We already know that Epic Games’s Unreal Engine 3 is running at least two of the Wii U’s games, Batman: Arkham City and Aliens: Colonial Marines. However, it seems that the studio’s support for the system may extend beyond simply porting their famous engine over to it…

Japanese Garden Demo

You may remember when Mark Rein stated he didn’t think he could get Unreal Engine 3 running on the 3DS, but also said that “the second Nintendo releases a piece of hardware that can run our engine well, we’ll be on it like water on fish.” And curiously, in a recent tweet, he said “Water, meet fish!”

Nothing’s confirmed, of course, but it’s possible he may have been hinting that his studio might’ve been behind the stunning Japanese Garden demo, which features lots of water and fish. Separately, Mark has also said that their supporting the Wii U with games of their own “isn’t an illogical conclusion to make.”

In any case, I’m happy to at least see the engine running smoothly on the system. Hopefully, that’ll help to quell some of the rampant HD twins fanboy rage.

Watch the complete Japanese Garden tech demo

You’re probably familiar with the gorgeous Japanese Garden tech demo Nintendo showed us at E3 by now. But what you may not know is that there is a second half to it that was not shown during the press conference.

Thanks to a camera-happy journalist at E3, we’ve now got a video of the entire demo, including the hawk’s little adventure to the Rock Garden at the Ryoanji Temple (I recognize it from my trip to Japan last year). The footage is off-screen, so it’s not the greatest quality, but you can still tell that there’s some mighty strong hardware packed into that unassuming white box.

Special thanks to Biohazard for finding this video and posting it on the forums!

Sega pegs Wii U for spring/summer 2012 launch

Sega

Sega’s Alan Pritchard said in an interview with GameSpot about Sonic Generations (which he also deconfirmed for the Wii U) that Nintendo’s new console is coming to store shelves in either the spring or summer of 2012. If anything, this fits with everything we’ve heard about the system’s release date so far, including Iwata’s statement that it was coming after April and an earlier rumour of a June launch.

The timing just doesn’t work. Generations releases this November, and the Wii U is coming out next spring/summer.

Iwata: The Wii U ‘is not going to be cheap’

Satoru Iwata at E3Seeing the sheer amount of awesome tech the Wii U packs, I wouldn’t blame you for being worried about what it’s gonna cost – even I’m concerned about it. Nintendo is refusing to provide even a ballpark figure for how much it’s gonna go for, but Satoru Iwata just went on record saying that it’s “not going to be cheap.” In a separate interview, he also apparently said that it’ll cost upwards of $250.

Earlier, Reggie mentioned that the console is going to be competitively priced with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and will offer “fantastic value” for its asking price. I doubt they’re gonna pull a PlayStation 3 stunt and price it at an outrageous $600, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a tag anywhere up to $400.

I think the message here is that if you want a Wii U, you’d better start saving now.

Scribblenauts creator is impressed by the new options the controller gives

Concept creator and director of Scribblenaughts, Jermiah Slaczka, has shared some ideas of a game using the Wii U’s new controller to ONM and his excitement over the number of gaming options that it gives.

“What’s really excited me as a developer with the new controller is the plethora of new options you have,” said Slaczka. “You have the touchscreen and the controller all in one.”

“One thing that’s really cool about this new tablet controller is that you have the ability to have asymmetrical gameplay. So one player can be doing one thing while another player can be doing something else on the TV. One player can be a doctor and he’s sitting there operating on the controller while there’s a EMT (emergency medical technician) in an ambulance having to pick up patients to the doctor.”

Though this is hardly confirmation that 5th Cell are busily working away on a game for the Wii U it does demonstrate that the new controller is certainly firing up ideas in developers.

Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge features touchscreen controls

I’m happy to see that Nintendo won’t be getting the shaft anymore with major multiplatform releases; and Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge, one of the first Wii U games to be announced, is certainly no exception.

Ninja Gaiden 3 - Razor's Edge

The Wii U version of the game will be unique in that it incorporates touchscreen controls in the style of Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword for the DS. Kotaku explains that Dragon Sword “used screen taps to throw shurikens and move Ryu, swipes of the screen to jump and slash at enemies,” so you can expect to see a similar setup in Razor’s Edge.

If you’d still rather enjoy the game’s shiny, awesome visuals without your fingers getting in the way (or perhaps you just prefer to play with physical controls), a traditional control scheme will be available, too. The touchscreen option does sound very interesting, though, and I’d at least give it a shot before making up my mind about it.

Darksiders II is ‘completely running’ on the Wii U, will be a launch title

There’s been some confusion lately because much of the footage we’ve seen of Wii U projects has actually been lifted from their PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 versions. This naturally raised the question of whether Nintendo has something to hide from us, power-wise.

Darksiders II

Well, leave it to THQ to lighten up your concerns, as they’ve come out and declared that Darksiders II runs perfectly well on the Wii U, and looks every bit as good on it as on the current-generation HD twins.

It apparently took developer Vigil Games only 5 weeks to port the game over. THQ’s Danny Bilson even claimed that the game was in a very much presentable state, but Nintendo didn’t allow them to bring the game to E3, as they didn’t want any full games being shown for the system this early on. From the sound of the interview, it sounds like the game very well may actually be complete already, so it should come as no surprise that it’s the first confirmed launch title for the system, too.
