Super Smash Bros. series to “change direction”

With the development of Kid Icarus over with,  Masahiru Sakurai can finally focus on the development of Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS. The connection between the two games seems like it is going to be a key feature. Last year he teased some ideas on how the two versions of the game could connect.

Now, in an interview with IGN Sakurai has said that the series will “change direction” a little.

There is a certain dead end we come to if we just expand the volume of the game. I intend to change direction a little as we go. The key to that’s going to be its dual support for 3DS/Wii U. I’m really just getting started on this so it’s going to take time, but I’ll come up with something that uses that link as the game’s central axis, so I hope you’re looking forward to it.

It will be interesting to see what these changes develop into.

Wii U controller is “very good” for pinball

Last year it was announced that Marvel Pinball, that was released in 2010 for PSN and Xbox 360 Arcade, was coming to the Wii U. The game is set to release for the Wii U later this year with the release date to be announced closer to the date.

In an interview with Revogamers, Zen Studios’ Neil Sorens said that the Wii U’s controller is “very good” for pinball but that he could not reveal any further information.

Well, the new Wii U controller is… very good for pinball, actually. I can’t talk to you much more than that right now but yeah, I agree that it would be pretty cool for pinball *laughs*

It sounds like Zen Studios have a few things in mind for the Wii U version of the game.

Unlikely that Crysis 3 is coming to Wii U

Those hoping for Crysis 3 on the Wii U may be disappointed to hear that the game is unlikely to have a Wii U version. In an interview with Destructoid, Crytek’s director of creative development, Rasmus Hoejengaard, commented that there was not a “fat chance”.

He goes on to say that he doesn’t think it would be possible and that he didn’t think “it was on the cards” to do a Wii U version of the game and that the chosen platforms for the game are the PC, PS3 and the Xbox 360.

Crytek were initially positive about the Wii U so it will be interesting to see if they have any plans for the console seeing as Crysis might not be on the menu.

More hints at a Wii U version of Star Trek game

About two months ago Wii U Go ran an article  about the posibility of a Wii U version of the upcoming Start Trek game because it said it would release on “all major consoles and PC”. Well ‘Nintrekkies’ (awful I know) might be pleased to hear that there is another beam of hope that the Wii U may get the game.

When quizzed about the possibility of a Wii U version in an interview with IGN, Brian Miller, senior vice president and producer at Paramount Pictures gave quite a positive response.

We are exploring right now all of our options to get on the platforms that make sense. It’s early, good thing we have a lot of time to figure that out, and over the next few months we’ll be able to announce a few more things.

Analysts weigh in on the Wii U’s future

E3 2012 is drawing ever nearer, the last weeks before its arrival can seem like years but before the Wii U is shown at E3 analysts have been giving their predictions.

In an interview with Gamer Industry, several analysts have given their opinion on the Wii U and its future, including everyone’s favourite analyst, Michael Pachter. Some of the predictions are positive and others not so much. Have a peak at this summary of their predictions and share your thoughts.

First off, Ted Pollak believes that though it is assumed that Nintendo are way behind on the technology front their actual strategies are quite clever.

Activision won’t comment on a Call of Duty Wii U game

The next game in the Call of Duty franchise, which is rumoured to be Black Ops 2, is going to be unveiled on the 1st of May. The popular first person shooter has graced Nintendo consoles before so a Wii U version doesn’t seem too far-fetched.

ONM decided to pose the question of a Call of Duty game on Nintendo’s next home console to Activision who simply replied “no comment”. Neither an affirmation or a denial but “no comment” could be seen to infer that there is something but they are not allowed to say anything yet. E3 2012 is going to be very interesting indeed.

Wii U to be a great console for MMORPG’s

Funcom's Upcoming fantasy MMO Secret World

The Wii U’s touchscreen controller may make the Wii U a great platform for MMO games. While speaking to Official Nintendo Magazine, Funcom’s Joel Bylos explained that the touchscreen would allow the console to run MMO games without compromising the experience.

Wii U could be the first real console on which running an MMORPG without compromise is plausible. The controller is perfect for lining up those rows of hotbars that are essential in most MMOs. A customisable touchscreen interface combined with the 3D spatial movement of a console controller could be a winner.

Hopefully developers will take note and utilise the advantages that the Wii U’s unique controller provides.

Ubisoft looking forward to seeing what they can do with the Wii U

In an interview with CVG, series director Theo Sanders said that though he could not reveal any specific details, they were looking forward to seeing what they could do with the Wii U version of Ghost Recon Online.

Our focus has been entirely on delivering a great launch on PC. Achieving that has been an all-hands-on-deck effort for the team this year. We’re looking forward to seeing what we can do on other platforms like Wii-U once we’re on solid ground with the PC launch. So no specific update for now, sorry!

Hopefully, we’ll receive more details on how Ghost Recon will utilise the Wii U’s features and touch screen controller when E3 2012 rolls around.

In the interview, Sanders did talk about some of the missions and maps that are in the game.

Wii U version of Aliens to be one of the best looking ones

Gearbox have been quite positive about the Wii U and could see potential in the console’s touchscreen controller. In an interview with CVG, chief creative officer, Brian Martell announced that he thought that the Wii U version of their upcoming Aliens: Colonial Marines game would be one of the best looking ones:

I think things like the Wii U are becoming very sexy with what you can do with the controller and especially with what we’re able to do using things like motion tracker or whatever sub gameplay that you get to see on there. I think that’s a compelling experience. I think the machine itself will be one of the best looking versions of the game, because they’ve got more RAM than some of the other things and they’re late in the cycle, so they’ve got this really great processor and all that kind of stuff.

Gearbox previously mentioned that they had not revealed all the ideas that they have for the Wii U and it will be interesting to see what they have planned for the Nintendo console’s version.

Lost Planet 3 to release in 2013. What about Wii U?

The third person shooter Lost Planet 3 will be heading to the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC in 2013. By this time, the Wii U would hopefully be out and therefore hypothetically, a  Wii U version of the Lost Planet 3 game would be possible. Now Gamer seemed to think so too and posed the question of a Wii U version to the developers who had this to say:

Right now we’ve announced 360, PS3 and PC which we believe are the platforms that will provide the best experience for Lost Planet 3. I honestly can’t comment on portfolio planning or strategy moving forward – it’s above my pay grade – so right now what we’re focused on is delivering the best game that we can for the platforms that we’re targeting. And we think that the release date is going to be a nice time to showcase the game.

It’s not sounding too positive at the moment but it’s hardly a definite ‘no’.
